In a questionnaire survey of female university students in Australia and Italy, Tiggemann, Verri, and Scarravaggi (2005) found similarities between the two groups on internalisation of the 'thin ideal' and on disordered eating; but only in Australia were body dissatisfaction and disordered eating significantly correlated with reading fashion magazines. The researchers posit less sensitivity to the influence of mass media in Mediterranean countries, perhaps because of greater exposure to thin models on billboards and in fashion magazines.
