This article discusses the various political scenarios which might arise in the near future in Chile. It argues that the current political situation is one that concerns itself with the restoration of democratic institutions following the sixteen-years old military dictatorship; to that it should be added the next logical step, namely, the consolidation of the political democracy likely to emerge from the current processes of transition. In both instances, the author discusses the significance of authoritarian features and remnants of the recent past and how they are to be dealt with. The preservation of the present political coalition is deemed fundamental to ensure a successful consolidation
