In recent years, the Brazilian Catholic Church has firmly committed itself to the cause of the poor and oppressed. In this paper, we shall examine the implementation of this ‘preferential option for the poor’ within one specific ecclesiastical unit, the Archdiocese of São Paulo. Special attention will be paid to the role of the upper hierarchy in the Archdiocese, and to the problems which they have encountered in the operationalization of the São Paulo Church's commitment to social justice
