The period from the 1940's to the 1960's was marked in Argentine literature by the so-called existentialist novel, represented by authors like Onetti, Mallea and Sábato. Manuel Gálvez appears at first sight to belong chronologically and thematically to this group, sharing their concern with Argentine identity and with the tragic isolation of man, the anguished search for the meaning of life. But closer examination reveals that Gálvez inhabited another world, ultra-conservative, Catholic, almost xenophobic. A study of his major works shows that he was in the same nationalist current as Bunge, Martínez Estrada and Scalabrini Ortiz, but went further than these authors or the existentialists in identifying a crucial component of the Argentine dilemma as being a spiritual solitude. It is this spiritual dimension which is Galvez' chief contribution to Latin American literature.
