AbstractThis article examines the various mechanisms involved in the formation of the political attitudes of Chileans who voted for Salvador Allende in 1970. The author's objective was to introduce a new dimension to our knowledge on the Chilean political process of 1970- a process in which the experiences of anonymous militants of the left have been given little importance. This article is based on a survey carried out principally among the Chileans of Montreal. It seeks to establish links between the characteristics of social origin, the political experience of parents, membership in a given age group, and sex, and the manner in which respondents decided to support the left. Survey responses resulted in the identification of three types of experiences of political socialization. This research demonstrates that the process of socialization can take place up to a relatively advanced age and that the factors involved are very diverse
