AbstractThe programme of Agricultural and Industrial Units for Women (UAIM) was established by the Mexican government in 1971. It was only in 1971 that it began to be implemented and, due to the programme, women of the countryside began to be integrated into the process of development. Based on ethnographic data collected by the author from communities situated in the henequen zone of the Yucatan, the article establishes a link between the integration of the female labour force into UAIM and the gradual installation of assembly plants in the region. In utilizing the concepts of production, social reproduction and ideology to organize this information, the author endeavors to present a picture of the factors of daily life which may slow down or speed up the preparation of female members of the labour force for work in the assembly plants
