Fuentes' novelistic production to date is examined in reference to the sociohistorical context of modern Mexico and three stages are proposed in the development of Fuentes' aesthetic solutions for the fictional representation of social and historical reality. In the first stage, Fuentes uses an interweaving of temporal patterns to achieve a critical vision of history and society in his effort to fuse both Mexico's pre-Colombian and more recent legacies into an artistically viable national novel. The second stage is characterized by an abandonment of the increasingly complex novelistic structures that Fuentes' enterprise naturally led him to use, and a focus on the problem of marginalization, both in a political sense as Mexico fell prey to international power politics, and in a social sense as a cause of social disintegration as different social classes become progressively more alienated from a sense of a common destiny. The third stage defines these problems in terms of language itself. Fuentes' recent works have become novels of protest and warning
