This study is based on a corpus of 191 titles of Costa Rican novels written between 1900 and 1986. The assembled material provides evidence of the ideological complexities, the systems of values, the forms of representation and the discursive patterns of a particular social group. All these factors are implicit in the process of naming a novel. Based on the theories of Leo H. Hoek (La Marque du titre) and on the different periods of Costa Rican history, we have analysed the principal steps in the evolution of these titles mainly with regards to their semantic and ideological transformations. The aim of this article is mainly to establish the relationship between literature, history and society to show the incidence of socio-political movements on literary discourse and in this case, on choice of titles
