An “anticommunist” rally, with clear antisemitic overtones, took place in Buenos Aires on August 20, 1932, sponsored by a right wing organization called the Argentine Popular Commission Against Communism. This paper discusses this event, examines how public opinion was mobilized against it, and why it failed. The meeting is placed within the broader historical contexts of the Jewish community of Buenos Aires, Argentine antisemitism, and the antisemitic component of Argentine nationalism. Several famous Argentine intellectuals, such as Leopoldo Lugones, Alfredo L. Palacios, Jorge Luis Borges, and Ricardo Rojas responded to an opinion survey conducted by the Argentine Jewish weekly newspaper Mundo Israelita, denouncing the rightist antisemitic campaign, which included the August 20 rally. In contrast to the “tragic week” of January 1919, which culminated with a “pogrom” against the Jewish community, a similar incident was averted in August 1932 through a well coordinated campaign by the Jewish community and press
