The research discusses gender and mental health in the experience of female administrative staff at a federal university in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. The approach is interdisciplinary and the epistemological perspective adopted is the biology of knowing, with an emphasis on reflection on cognition and everyday life. The aim of the research was to understand how the experiences of the university's female technical-administrative staff, in relation to gender and mental health care, take place and are updated. The methodology is qualitative, using cartographic clues to construct markers perceived in the participants' self-narratives, during meetings in which they weave conversations: ideas, emotions and practices involving gender relations and mental health care. The analysis points to mechanisms that maintain forms of competition and disrespect in relations with female technical-administrative staff at the university. Practices and mechanisms show gender bias, such as: little visibility and recognition for the work done by women, difficulties in occupying management positions, the attitude of taking it upon themselves to fulfill tasks that are collective. States of mental health illness emerge in the competitive relations of an educational system that reinforces the sexual division of labor and its consequences. Relationships and daily practices of cooperation and affection, such as meetings organized to promote caring actions and conversations in everyday work, are indicated as possibilities for transformation in the context of higher education
