Benedicta Serrano lives in El Agustino, a barrio that rises on a bare hilltop amidst the seemingly endless shanty-towns of Lima, Peru. Like everyone in El Agustino, Benedicta is poor, but she is neither dispirited nor disorganised. Despite continuous harassment and persistent threats of violence from police and army on one side and leftist insurgents on the other, Benedicta's poverty has led her to community organisation rather than isolation, activism rather than apathy. Like many of her friends and neighbours, Benedicta Serrano became and remained an activist through her involvement with the Catholic Church, a church that itself has been transformed, by liberation theology and the organisations it spawns, from unquestioned ally of the old order to prophetic voice of a new one
