This essay examines the failure of the Argentine political system through the prism of consent. In particular, it examines the reasons for the lack of mass consent in that country, and its consequences. Although often neglected in favour of discussion of party and partisan politics, or buried under a variety of institutional analyses, the issue of consent—its material and ideological bases, its social component, its horizontal and vertical dimensions, its contingency, its (lack of) institutionalisation, to say nothing of its very importance as the cornerstone for regime legitimacy—is at the root of the century-old failure to achieve political stability in the country
