Il peut paraître surprenant de rapprocher dignité et rationalité axiologique dans le plaidoyer de Raymond Boudon en faveur de l'objectivité des valeurs éthiques. Pourtant, il y voyait la valeur centrale de notre modernité occidentale, dominant toute notre hiérarchie morale. C'est sur ce rôle méconnu du principe d'égale dignité dans la pensée de Raymond Boudon que sera mis l'accent dans cet article, à partir duquel sera aussi interrogée sa théorie de la rationalité axiologique
