Cet article est consacré à l’étude du « programme disciplinaire » conduit par R.K.Merton pour institutionnaliser la sociologie des sciences. À partir de l’exploitation d’un matériau original – la correspondance de Merton accessible à la Rare Book & Manuscript Library de l’Université Columbia (New York) – nous proposons d’évaluer ce qui distingue la « connaissance publique » de ce programme de la « connaissance privée » reconstruite à partir des échanges épistolaires. En distinguant les composantes d’une discipline, l’article montre par ailleurs de quelle manière un programme disciplinaire intègre le caractère socialement différencié du milieu académique
