Museums are facing critical challenges in regard to building projects. There are various risks associated with undertaking a capital project including the possibility of financial setbacks, poor reception by audiences, or unexpected complications in running a new facility. Museums engage in building programs to meet the goals of new business models, to improve care of collections, or to modernize or replace deteriorating facilities. These extraordinarily costly projects often require seeking partnerships with outside organizations, engaging in new financing arrangements, and experimenting with new architectural or engineering designs. As museums implement building projects they may need to close to the public, losing touch with audiences. Selecting the appropriate systems and consultants to manage projects is a common challenge for museums. Once open, the museum may be saddled with extra operating costs and the need for additional marketing. The author offers a set of steps that can allay the risks of museum construction projects and assure success
