The effective participation of women in the political sphere is linked to the objective of improving the quality of democracy, which is impossible to achieve without their presence in the different spaces of representation. This article explores the importance of incorporating gender parity in the debates on the rules that establish the parameters for the selection of candidates and authorities of political parties based on the experience in Argentina. The analysis is based on three axes. The first deals with the open discussions regarding Law 27.412, which introduced mandatory compliance with gender parity in the lists for the election of legislative positions and party bodies. The second raises the relevance of translating the quantitative leap implied by gender parity into a substantive modification of power relations. Finally, it warns about the limitations of formalist approaches and calls for a reflection on the actors involved in the academic discussion of these issues, concluding that the maintenance of formats that exclude the gender perspective is unlikely to achieve progress towards real equality between women and men in political participation
