While acknowledging the long history of the Southern African connection with South and East Asia, this article's concern is primarily with the development of relations between South Africa and the Asian states of the Commonwealth, through the darkening days of isolation from 1947 onwards until South Africa's readmission in 1994. Emphasis is placed unpolitical and economic parallels and contrasts and their portents for the future
