This experimental ethnographic essay juxtaposes expository sections on the concept of severity as a "composition of life" with stories of a rural informant in Southeast Texas' Piney Woods. The essay explores the notion of a flattened, generalized rurality that becomes specific in moments of storytelling, living through hardship, and finding oneself struggling to just keep going. It uses the specificity of story and regionality to show how the idea of severity, or form pushed to its limit, is experienced by an individual living out on the edge
