By commenting upon Fritz Ringer's Max Weber: An Intellectual Biography, this article undertakes to sketch the state of affairs of our current biographical knowledge about Max Weber. After offering a commentary on some of the relevant biographical literature, the reliability of Marianne Weber's Lebensbild is evaluated by indicating some contested issues in our present knowledge about Max Weber's biography. This illustrates the need for a proper intellectual biography of Max Weber
