A alimentação é um dos setores da economia que melhor exprime as contradições entre o sistema socioeconómico hegemónico e o conhecimento ecológico contemporâneo. Em oposição à agricultura industrial, temos testemunhado o surgimento de várias iniciativas que abraçam a agroecologia como princípio basilar. Adotando como casos de estudo a cooperativa Rizoma e a AMAP Maravilha, este artigo constitui uma exploração das implicações, potencialidades e limitações de colocar princípios ecológicos no centro da atividade económica num contexto de hegemonia capitalista. Como argumento central, defende-se que a democratização económica é imprescindível para desenvolver circuitos alimentares realmente sustentáveis
