Although he earned very little from his precarious career as a freelance commercial artist, James Arnold made good use of his artistic talents to become a principal recorder in his generation of the changing patterns of rural life. His seven books (from the thirteen manuscripts he produced altogether) are filled not only with an easy prose but with his fine drawings of craftsmen at work in smithy or in workshop, and of his first and greatest love, illustrating the fine lines and even finer craftsmanship of country waggons and farm carts
