One of the earliest accounts of washing clothes is that found in the Odyssey of Homer, thought to have originated in the eighth century B. c. The scene depicts Nausikäa, the princess of the Phaiakins and her maids on an island:Now when they had come to the delightful stream of the river, where there was always a washing place, and plenty of glorious water, that ran through the wash what was ever so dirty, there, they unyoked the mules ... while they, from the wagon, lifted the wash in their hands and carried it to the black water, and stamped on it in the basins, making arace and game of it, until they had washed and rinsed all dirt away,—then spread it out in line along the beach of the sea, where the water of the sea had washed themost pebbles up on the dry shore. Then they themselves, after bathing and anointing themselves ith olive oil ate their dinner all along by the banks of the river and waited for the laundry to dry out in the sunshine
