Stith Thompson is reported to have said to critics of his methods for indexing folklore material, ‘I know it's crazy, but it works’. As one currently attempting to classify the folk narrative tradition of Wales, I can readily sympathize with critics of this method which, despite its usefulness as a means of organizing and presenting folklore data, presents such immense theoretical and practical difficulties. In a sense, Professor Thompson's remark sums up all there is to say about the Type/Motif Index. Nevertheless, this paper intends to consider once again some of the theoretical and practical problems inherent in this approach, as they relate specifically to creating a clear and workable classification for Welsh folk narrative tradition
