The ‘Seasons of Celebration: Ritual in Eastern Christian Culture’ project was initiated to document and study the ritual life of this tradition and its many communities in Canada. These Orthodox, Oriental, and Eastern Rite Catholic communities are all under the Eastern Christian umbrella. Many have a foik ritual layer in their cultural life which is rooted in homelands as diverse as Coptic villages in Egypt and Sudan, ancient villages in Rumania bulldozed in the latter days of Ceaucescu's reign, and the ancient city of Damascus where the faithful live midst the large Muslim population. The first concern underlying the project was to understand the way the cosmic Christianity of the Christian East shaped and informed the lives of farmers and professionals, rural and urban communities, old and young. The second was to begin to understand the shapethe ritual tradition took in the settlement and development periods of Canada and in thecontext of modern culture there
