In a recent survey of medieval European agriculture Professor Georges Duby suggested that three main phases can be distinguished. Between A.D. 900 and 1180 the dearth of documentary evidence precludes exact analyses but the period generally witnessed ‘demographic expansion and agricultural conquest’ within the dominant framework of the seigneuries, both lay and ecclesiastical. Between A.D. 1180 and 1320 written sources become rather more plentiful and reveal the increasing impact of the urban economy upon rural communities, including the appearance of inter-regional trade to support non-agrarian settlements and a greater diversity within the peasantry, brought about by involvement in a money economy and a tendency towards greater individualism. Finally, between 1320 and 1440 the profusion of surviving documents is in itself testimony of the shift away from seigneurial estates towards the newer peasant structure during a period of demographic, political, social and economic upheaval
