The bed-outshot was a feature of many of the older houses in that part of Ireland to the north-west of a line running from Galway Bay to the east coast of Antrim. It consisted of a small rectangular projection of one of the side walls of the house which formed a diminutive annexe to accommodate a bed. It was, as a general rule, located close to the main fireplace in the kitchen and on that side of the house which was regarded as the back. Structurally, it was formed by stepping out the side wall to leave a rectangular alcove open to the kitchen. It was usually roofed by carrying the main roof of the house down over it (Plate 17,a) but, occasionally, it was provided with a small separate roof of its own (Plate 17,b
