My approach to the theme of the second Annual Conference of the Society for Folk Life Studies, viz. folk life and its related disciplines, is somewhat different from that of the other speakers. Their subjects deal with phenomena which are also common to folk life research and consequently linguistics, archaelogy and architecture can be regarded as service disciplines to folk life studies. With geography, however, folk life studies have a more complex relationship, since it is the method of academic geography and its point of view that have the greatest relevance to folk life research. To illustrate this thesis I shall therefore concentrate on the methodology of our respective subjects and indicate their relationship with other subjects in the social sciences
