An outstanding feature of the landscape of the district of Craven in Yorkshire is the number of barns. These, until recently, were an essential part of the organization of farms, but modern changes in agricultural practice have left them unused, often desolate in the fields. Craven barns are so distinctive in style and plan that they have been distinguished by the name ‘Craven Laithe’ — ‘laithe’ being the Norse name for barn which has survived into modern dialect. The two names are interchangeable. My husband referred to the ‘barn‘, but also to the ‘laithe porch’. These barns, of course, are not only found in Craven, for the type spreads over the adjacent hilly districts. The arable areas of the Vale of York to the east, and the different traditions of Lancashire, demanded barns of different function and plan
