A High Status Burial from Grasshopper Ruin, Arizona

During the 1966 session of the University of Arizona Archaeological Field School an elaborate burial was excavated. The grave goods were placed in two layers. Layer 1 was approximately 90 cm. above Layer 2, which was associated with the body. Layer 1 may have been deposited some time after the grave was originally filled. Included in the two areas were 36 ceramic vessels, 128 projectile points, an incised bone wand, and many other items. The implication that Burial 140 may represent a high status burial within a socially stratified society is discussed
