The Chemehuevi were originally a branch of the Southern Paiute who, prior to the middle of the nineteenth century, ranged over the Mohave Desert hunting and gathering. At the invitation or upon the sufferance of the Mohave they began to filter over to the Colorado River to take up floodwater farming in the Colorado Valley and Chemehuevi Valley. Here they underwent a degree of acculturation as a result of Yuma contacts. The Mohave also brought some Chemehuevi to Cottonwood Island. War broke out with the Mohave in 1865, and the Chemehuevi fled back into the desert. After peace had been restored in 1867, many Chemehuevi returned to the river to live on the Colorado River Reservation or in the Chemehuevi Valley
