Detailed survey of a 100 square mile area on the west side of the San Pedro valley south of Benson has revealed over 80 Cochise sites on terraces and pediments above the floodplains. Two gross categories of artifacts from 12 of those sites show a patterned distribution spatially segregated into two zones, and suggest that higher elevations near the mountains were preferred sites for prehistoric occupation
