The difficulties in recognizing Late El Paso phase or protohistoric occupations in southern New Mexico and western Texas are well known. After the decline of the Puebloan system in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, the region was not abandoned, as evidenced by populations of mobile hunter-gatherers encountered by Spanish explorers and missionaries in the 1500s and 1600s. Attributing sites to this period is difficult; features are hard to recognize, and ceramic assemblages are difficult to isolate particularly at sites with multicomponent ceramic assemblages. At LA 129533, nine brown ware sherds with attributes fitting mobile hunter-gatherer groups were associated with a feature yielding a calibrated radiocarbon date of A.D. 1310–1360 andA.D. 1390–1440. They show little evidence of formal tool use in production of the vessel, typical of pottery produced using an expedient technology by mobile hunter-gatherers
