In 1983, unusually high water levels at Lake Powell exposed human skeletal remains and artifacts in a small alcove on Rock Creek, a western tributary of the Colorado River. The site had not been recorded by the earlier Glen Canyon Project; however, a nearby site, Captains Alcove, had been excavated in 1979–1980. Excavations at the newly recorded site discovered artifacts and the remains of at least three individuals, all apparently of early Basketmaker II occupation. A radiocarbon date of 2420 ± 100 years B.P. was obtained from tissue of one of the interments
