Dismembered human remains found at a number of Anasazi sites in the American Southwest have been interpreted as evidence of cannibalism. This archaeological evidence may in fact be caused by other cultural manifestations. An examination of the accepted physical criteria indicates that warfare, and its associated aspects, is a more likely conclusion. The patterns from sites are identical to those due to death by battering with possible corpse mutilation. A reappraisal of the ethnographic record supports this view. A limited conceptional view of Anasazi burial practices may also be contributing to the misinterpretation of some human remains
