Archaeologists addressing issues of settlement dynamics in the Pre-Columbian American Southwest are turning to new strategies of landscape analysis. Flexible scale, an inclusive perspective on the archaeological record, and an interest in establishing the cultural context within which such processes as aggregation and abandonment occurred are all hallmarks of this approach. Examination of the Burnt Corn community landscape, a late-13th century A.D. settlement in the western Galisteo Basin of New Mexico, indicates that settlement dynamics look quite different at multiple scales. Functional, economic explanations of these patterns are less satisfactory than those rooted in Pueblo tradition. The image of Ancestral Pueblo settlement that emerges is one in which the daily lives of local people were structured by a landscape of historical and cultural meaning
