Reported occurrences of cruciform artifacts and some inferences regarding them are summarized. Four types of cruciforms distinguished by metric and formal attributes are defined. These data are compared with problematical objects which may be related in form or function. Evidence is presented for the geographic and temporal distribution of ground-stone cruciform types and for a possible early tradition of chipped stone, four-pointed artifacts in North America. A hypothetical function for cruciforms is discussed
