Current methods used to date Gila Bichrome and Polychrome are evaluated to provide a greater understanding of the Salado Red Ware complex and temporal placement of the Gila Horizon. The general design styles, specific motifs, and manufacturing techniques used to produce late-thirteenth-century Winslow and Jeddito Orange and Yellow Wares are identified as antecedent to Gila Bichrome and Polychrome. The relationship of Salado Red Ware and the Pinedale style is argued to support an early-fourteenth-century inception date for Gila Polychrome. Contextual and interpretive issues surrounding the Salado Red Ware complex and late prehistoric cultural dynamics in the southern Southwest are also discussed
