Artifacts made of nonlocal obsidian were often associated with Hohokam village sites in the Phoenix Basin. Analysis of obsidian artifacts (n=75) from the Gatlin site (AZ Z: 2:1 [ASM]), a prehistoric Hohokam village in southwestern Arizona, by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence indicated that most were from the Sauceda Mountain source. In contrast, 33 percent of the projectile points and preforms were made of nonlocal obsidian, suggesting trade in finished items. Resource mobilization may have been one option for provisioning events such as funerals and other ceremonies
