White ware ceramics associated with the ninth-century occupation of southwest Colorado are characterized by diverse painted designs. In the research presented here, petrographic analysis is used to better understand the production of these igneous rock-tempered ceramics and thus to gain insight into the source of the design variation. Analysis reveals slight differences in tempering materials at different sites, suggesting that the ceramics were produced at a small scale in many locations. Comparison of the temper with raw material sources suggests that potters in different locations were using the same criteria to select their temper. Thus, it appears that localized white ware production was part of a widespread technological tradition
