Descriptions of Mohave culture in the middle of the nineteenth century are contained in such writings as Stratton’s account of the captivity of the Oatman girls, the reports of the railroad surveyors (Sitgreaves and Whipple) and accounts of the steamboat captains (Ives). The long period of intertribal warfare was ending, but the apprehensive Mohave fought the White intruders on several occasions before they were finally subdued. Reservations were established, but the Mohave had to undergo many hardships before making a better adjustment to changing times
