In 1916, Dr. Colton began the archaeological survey of the Museum of Northern Arizona by recording sites in the vicinity of Flagstaff. In order to locate additional sites and to visit the Hopi Mesas, he and his wife, during the summer of 1916, journeved to Oraibi by means of wagon and mule team. In days before modern roads were available this was indeed a perilous trip, but one successfully completed within a period of two weeks
