Cultural diversity is an issue that confronts most contemporary nation-states, capitalist and alike. While the debate over the issue of multiculturalism has been played out in public over the past two decades in the United States, the post-Mao leadership of the People's Republic of China (PRC) has been engaged in reshaping the contours of the socialist Chinese state's ongoing project of officially representing itself as a many-nationalitied country (duominzu guojia). It is the connection between the nature of the socialist Chinese state and the nature of cultural pluralism within Chinese society that forms the background of this article. A number of excellent recent studies on PRC minorities have addressed how minority identities have been constructed by the Chinese state and in Han popular culture.
