In recent years, some scholars in Chinese studies in the United States have begun to look beyond those historical processes that had once been viewed as pivotal for twentieth-century China's modernization. In this review article, the authors examine four works representative of the pioneering effort to decenter the May Fourth Movement: David Der-wei Wang's Fin-de-Siècle Splendor , Lydia Liu's Translingual Practice , Leo Lee's Shanghai Modern , and Yeh Wenhsin's edited volume, Becoming Chinese .
