This paper draws information from documentary and archaeological sources to examine nineteenth-century shipping communications.I will focus on the study of a ship-to-port communication setting in the port city of Rio Grande, Southern Brazil, to discuss its importance for the local community and its engagement with a broader Atlantic seafaring culture
