Spatial descriptions of the houses in Ottoman-written documents provide valuable dataabout the production and use of daily living spaces. This data helps the paper study itemsin the living spaces, such as oda, sofa, dehliz, tahtapuş, gurfe, selamlık, and gölgelik, whichdo not have an identified specific function in houses of pre-modernization Istanbul. Thepaper discusses how spaces were organized and used, and also provides an intertemporalcomparison of these spaces that reveals how they were transformed in time. The sample groupchosen for understanding Istanbul houses on the eve of the modernization are recorded inIstanbul Court Register number 3 at the beginning of the seventeenth century. By conductinga semantic analysis of terminology about the spaces and a quantitative analysis of the termsin this sample group, the manner of building and organizing the living spaces of the housesin that time will be clarified
