The aim of this paper is to better understand the significance of International Congressesof Byzantine Studies within the Byzantine studies in general and the 10th InternationalCongress of Byzantine Studies 1955-Istanbul, which has been overshadowed in memoriesby the most regretful events of 6–7 September, in particular. The paper briefly deals withthe Byzantine studies and politics of culture in Turkey between 1926 and 1950s, which mayhave helped Istanbul’s election as the host of 10th International Congress. It focuses on thepreparations for the 10th International Congress by the Turkish organizing committee andTurkish government, based on the minutes of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey andthe archival documents of Cahide Tamer, and finally it discusses the 10th InternationalCongress, members of the Turkish organizing committee, participants, papers, excursions,exhibitions, and publications
