Studies of the breakaway nation states examined in this book have attracted a broad range of scholarship covering debates about governance, violence, civil war, and human rights, among other things. However, this book is distinct in its study of these cases through the lens of secessionism as an analytical and conceptual category. Indeed, there are a couple of great achievements in the book. First, the book highlights the fascinating manner in which colonialism is used by political actors as a central justification for secession. It is interesting, for example, how the legacy of colonialism is being turned on its head and narrated positively by the present intelligentsia: in places such as Somaliland, the United Kingdom has been called upon to recognize its ‘children’. Second, however, despite the overt presence of colonialism, and how a great deal of secessionist discourse springs from the actions/legacy of colonialism, the scholars here do not solely rely on ‘the unending legacy of colonialism’ to analyse the current (often problematic and violent) manifestations of secessionism. Instead, perhaps implicitly, they focus on the agency of the current intelligentsia—and its failure of imagination—when contemplating the dynamics of current secessionist politics.
