Journal Article Songs of a new era: Popular music and political expression in the Ivorian crisis Get access Anne Schumann Anne Schumann * *Anne Schumann ([email protected]) is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. This article was first drafted when I was a teaching fellow at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London. The dissertation research upon which the article is based was supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the University of London Central Research Fund, and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) Postgraduate Fieldwork Fund. I would like to thank Graham Furniss for his support. I am much obliged to Sara Dorman for comments on an earlier draft at an African Studies Association of the United Kingdom (ASAUK) journal writing workshop. Discussions with Liz Gunner, Maria Suriano, and Wendy Willems of the Performance and Social Meaning reading group at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research (WISER) greatly helped in refining the arguments. I also thank Joe Trapido, Nic Cheeseman, Rita Abrahamsen, and the anonymous reviewers for their insightful comments. Benjamin Téhé assisted with discographic research. In Abidjan, I am grateful to the zouglou artists, journalists, and intellectuals who supported my work, took the time to respond to my many questions, and without whose help and hospitality this article could not have been written.
