The blurb of this text describes it as being simultaneously the ‘first authoritative biography’ of Sudan's much-maligned President Umar al-Bashir as well as a ‘comprehensive military history of Sudan’. This unusual combination leads to something of a hotchpotch structure. Chapters 1 to 3, which act as a potted military and political history of Sudan up until 1989, are evidently not rooted in original research and are marred by a number of tangents that narrate the personal experiences of imperial Britons in Sudan. Chapter 4 is the only one to fulfil the requirements of a standard biography, exploiting interviews with relatives, colleagues, and inhabitants of al-Bashir's home town of Sarasir to form a picture of his early life and military career up until 1989. Chapters 5 to 8 blend military history with political analysis, first discussing al-Bashir's rise to power in alliance with his Islamist mentor Hasan al-Turabi and then eventual rift with the latter, then narrating the military conduct of the wars in the south and west, as well as related peace negotiations. Chapters 9 and 10 assess the International Criminal Court's indictment of al-Bashir and the secession of South Sudan respectively, whereas Chapter 11 takes the story up to the present.
