‘Do I contradict myself, very well, then I contradict myself. I'm large, I contain multitudes.’ Whitman's famous line is aptly quoted by Mike McGovern (p. 4) to get the reader immediately acquainted with his perspective on the Ivoirian conflict. Making War in Côte d'Ivoire indeed aims to describe the many contradictions of the Ivoirian crisis and the self-contradictions of its actors, while bringing to light the multiplicity of levels of understanding required to account for it. McGovern emphasizes the methodological necessity of acknowledging the coexistence of the disparate and subjective motivations that – in the Ivoirian crisis, as elsewhere – produce war through their ‘fragile, conjunctural and temporary’ alignments (p. 3). The alignments that could have brought Côte d'Ivoire to a fully fledged war (but luckily didn't) were those connecting the hegemonic aims of President Laurent Gbagbo and his entourage with the goals of middle-level ‘intercalary figures’ (p. 175), mediating between the interests of nationalistic elites and the claims of the unemployed and marginalized (though often educated) youth. The ‘patriotic’ mobilization of the youth, who posed as ‘defenders’ of the nation against northern insurgents, revealed itself as having an agenda of its own. Jeunes patriotes, in fact, used nationalism, militias, and violence in their struggle for access to wealth and status.
